Mildred Mellaquay Woods, 80, of South Bend, passed away on Monday, July 10, 2006, in her son's home.
Mildred was born on October 3, 1925, in Burnsville, Mississippi, to the late Arthur and Hazel (Gober) Gilchrist. She moved to the area in 1942 and had lived here ever since. On November 23, 1944, as Mildred M. Gilchrist, she married Lester D. Woods, who preceded her in death on August 19, 1988. Along with her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Vivian Scroggs; two grandchildren, Michael Parish and Jessica Scroggs; and by a great-grandchild, Destiny Ratkay.
Mrs. Woods is survived by her son, Kenneth (Marilyn) Woods of South Bend; five grandchildren, April (Dave Ratkay) Woods, Jason (Heather) Scroggs, Jodi Scroggs-Ball, Kelly (Mark) Leisuk and Patty Delon; nine great-grandchildren, Sarah, David, Emily and Daniel Ratkay, Isabella and Jeremy Ball, Tess Leisuk, and Tatum and John Delon; two sisters, D. Smith of Elkhart, Indiana, and Ella Sanderson of Mishawaka, Indiana; and by two brothers, Charles Gilchrist of Phoenix, Arizona, and Carl Gilchrist of Elkhart.
Mildred worked for Industrial Packaging for eight years, before retiring in 1985. She enjoyed sewing and cooking, and spending time with her grandchildren and family.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 PM today, July 13, 2006, in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend. Funeral services for Mildred will be held at 11 AM Friday, July 14, 2006, in the funeral home, with burial to follow at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, South Bend.
