Victor C. Moreno, Sr., of Groves, Texas passed away on Thursday at his daughter's home in Galveston.

He attended Franklin, Woodrow Wilson, St. Mary's School in Port Arthur as well as Lamar. He grew up on East 17th Street in Port Arthur.

He was 14 years old when his father taught him about photography, developing film and printmaking. Ever since then he was taking photos, first as a hobby, later weddings, and served as the state photographer for the Knights of Columbus for 15 years up until December 1991. He even went to get photos of Pope John Paul II when he came to San Antonio. After he finished high school at St. Mary's, he met Marina in 1941. He was in the CCC Camp in Beaumont, Texas when they met. They were married on Nov. 28, 1942. He went to work at the shipyard in Orange, Texas. In April of 1943, he was inducted into the Army. He went to Italy as a medic. He returned in 1945 from Italy and saw his son, Victor Jr. for the first time when he was 2 & 1/2 years old.

Life after the war started on 10th Street in Port Arthur, Texas, where he and Marina walked 12 blocks to attend Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church every Sunday. He was very devoted to Our Lady of Guadalupe and continued attending OLG for two years after moving his family to Groves. He made sure every one of his children was baptized at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church.

He began working at Texaco in Sept. of 1947 and retired in 1982 after 35 years of service. He worked shift hours for 16 years. In 1950, he moved his family to Groves. 1950 was a difficult year, with Texaco being on a 4 month strike, and he and his wife lost their first baby girl. Somehow, the "Lord gave us the will to carry on all the time with our Faith in God, we have made it." Victor was a good father; active with the boys in Scouts and the girls in Campfire, always right there with them. He was also very active in the church. He was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Groves, Texas. Victor was active in his community. He was the Pinata Chairman for the Mexican Independence Day Celebration sponsored by Port Arthur Chamber of Commerce during the festival's early beginnings. Victor's love for crosses was evident by the many crosses he acquired during his lifetime. Once he lovingly restored a life size crucifix to its original beauty and hung it in his home. When he retired from Texaco, he began making wooden crosses using his yearly Christmas trees and trees from around his yard. His love for the cross was evident in his hobby of taking "time out" for creating and personalizing crosses for family members to cherish and he died on Sept. 14th, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

Victor was preceded in death by his parents Lionidez M. Castillo Moreno and Tereso O. Moreno; his daughter, Maria Theresa Moreno; his siblings, Rudy Moreno, who died in WWII, Dan Moreno, who died in 2002 and Delia Moreno, who died in 1996.

He was survived by his loving wife, Marina C. Moreno; his daughters, Theresa J. Lomonte and her husband, Joe Lomonte and Patricia Moreno; his sons, Victor C. Moreno, Jr. and his wife, Diana Moreno and Arthur Moreno; along with five grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

He was also survived by his living siblings, Sister Joseph Moreno, Eppie Moreno Elizondo and Tony Moreno, Rosa Moreno, Johnny "Juan" Moreno of Vidor, Mike Moreno of Nederland and Trudy Moreno along with thirty four nieces and nephews and many cousins in San Benito, Texas.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at St. Peter Catholic Church in Groves. Msgr. Kenneth Greig will serve as celebrant of the Mass. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens with Military Funeral Honors.
