OBITUARY:
(old handwritten paper kept in the Bible)
"We lost a dear friend and loved one. William Harold McKinney, known to all as Harold, passed away Friday June 8, 1956 at the home. He left us as peacefully and quietly as his friendly loving way deserved - since he had to go. Perhaps someday, we shall understand why. The children loved him as did all. He was happy, jolly, and in wonderful health. His jovial spirit shone upon all and was reflected in all who touched his life.
Harold was born April 10, 1909 in Tulare, California. At the age of one year, his family moved to Kansas where they resided for eight years, returning to his birthplace in Tulare, California.
Harold returned to Kansas in his early manhood, where he met and was united in marriage to his wife, Hazel. The early days of their marriage were spent in Kansas, later moving with their daughter, Peggy Jeane, to California, where they resided near the parents of both. Since 1939 their home has been in or near the vicinity of Yates Center.
In January of 1944 Harold was called into the service of his country. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy. After his boot training in Farragut, Idaho, he served in all the major battles of the South Pacific, on the U.S.S. Rooks. Harold received his honorable discharge from the Navy December 1, 1945.
He returned to his family and his work as Distributing Agent for the Skelly Oil Company. In this capacity, hardly a resident in Woodson County could say they hadn't known our wonderful and jolly Harold McKinney.
Surviving are his wife, Hazel of the home, his daughter and son in law, Peggy Jean and Walter Cole, their children, Carolyn, David and Lila of Wichita; his parents, Charles and Bertha McKinney of Tulare, Calif., three brothers, Blaine of Anderson, Calif., Ray of Tulare, Calif., and Glenn of Modesto, Calif., one sister, Fay Harturg of Redding, Calif., his parents-in-law, Bill and Lula Taylor of Climax, Kas., many other relatives and a host of friends.
Services were conducted at Johnson's Chapel, Monday, June 11, at 2:00 p.m., by Miles C. Cook. Charles Carpenter, accompanied by Mrs. Walter Lesline, sang "Beyond the Sunset." Military services were conducted at the grave in the Yates Center cemetery.
Pallbearers were Ted West, Faunt Ibbetson, Arthur Herder, Robert Town, Matt Clasen, Hartel Dyer."
