She was born May 31, 1907, in Xenia, Ohio, to Carl and Mary (Guthrie) Pence. Her first marriage was to Mark Hitchings to which two daughters were born.
she then married Gerald (Toby) Sapp May 24, 1959 in Gilman Illinois. He survives.
Other survivors include her daughter Betty Hitchings of Martinton, Patti LaVelle of Chicago and step daughter Janie Smith of Odin, two sister, Juanita Short and Doris Simnick, both of Gilman; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Virgie was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Walter, Leroy, and Marion Pence; and three sisters, Gladys Lain, Leona Campbell and Barbara Pence.
Virgie was a telephone operator for Bell Telephone Co. for 22 years and she was a member of the Telephone Pioneers.
Services were held at the DeValk Funeral Home, Watseka with the Rev. Hubert Lytle officiating and burial in the GAR Cemetery.
