Norbert John Schindler, 84, of Jacksonville, died Wednesday, May 2, 2007, at Barton W. Stone Home in Jacksonville. He was born February 22, 1923, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the son of John A. and Helene Louise Kowalska Schindler. He married Nancy Jean Hughes on October 23, 1943, in Jacksonville, and she preceded him in death on January 14, 1997.

He is survived by two sons, John Daniel "Dan"(wife, Krys) of Glide, Oregon and Richard William "Dick" of Jacksonville; three daughters, Mary Beth Stevenson, Nancy Joan "Jodi" (husband, David) Mawson, and Ann (husband, Larry "Brock") Brockhouse, all of Jacksonville; seven grandchildren, T.L. (wife, Leigh Ann) Schindler, Senta (husband, Mike) Cornelius, Carly Stevenson, Audra (husband, Tom) Chaudoin, Jarrod (wife, Tracy) Mawson, Alaina Brockhouse, and Norby Schindler; seven great-grandchildren, Jacob Schindler, Micaela, Kaidyn, and Koby Cornelius, and Leah, Troy, and Nora Chaudoin; one sister, Gloria (deceased husband, Robert) Loper of Mesa, Arizona; sisters-in-law Pat (deceased husband, William L.) Fay and Lois F. (deceased husband, William "Billy Dan") Hughes, both of Jacksonville and Ruthann (deceased husband, Leonard A. "Bud") Schindler of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; former daughter-in-law Sharon Lawless Schindler of St. Anthony, Idaho; and a number of nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Leonard A. "Bud" Schindler.

Mr. Schindler was a graduate of Marquette University High School in Milwaukee in 1940. He worked as a Navy Inspection Clerk at Cutler-Hammer, Inc. until he enlisted in the United States Army Chemical Corps in October of 1942. He transferred to the Army Specialized Training Program and came to Illinois College with that unit in 1943. When the unit was closed in March of 1944, he was transferred to the ASTP Unit at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. He completed his courses there in December of 1944, and was transferred to Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago. World War II ended and Mr. Schindler was discharged from the Army in February of 1946 and returned to Jacksonville, where he graduated from Illinois College in June of 1948.

While at Illinois College, Mr. Schindler was an instructor in chemistry to student nurses at Our Saviour and Passavant hospitals, and after graduating, conducted the same courses at Illinois College. In 1950, he served as administrative assistant at the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce, and later owned and operated, with his wife, Nancy, the Credit Bureau of Jacksonville. He worked with the Boy Scouts, and particularly enjoyed assisting Scout Leader Bill Deem on scout trips to Canada. He joined the IAC Group, a Finance Insurance Company, in 1957, and served the Kansas City based firm for thirty-two years. Since his retirement in 1989, he was a self-employed insurance consultant. Over the years, Mr. Schindler enjoyed his hobbies of refinishing and repairing furniture, landscaping and gardening, traveling, and big game hunting. He was a member of the Church of Our Saviour where he was an usher for many years.

Services were entrusted to Williamson Funeral Home of Jacksonville, Illinois.
