Matt was a vegan animal rights activist. He was the president of the Vegan Society here in Los Angeles, California. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Charlie and Ruth McNew of Escondido and his sister, Laura Phelps. He is survived by his mother, Mary Peifer of Vista; his father and stepmother, Mark and Julia Phelps of Oceanside; his brothers and sisters, Natalie Romero of Eureka; Zach Phelps of Oceanside; Hannah Phelps of Oceanside; his paternal grandparents, Don and Loreta Phelps of Texas; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He will be greatly missed by all.
