John E. Franzreb, Jr. enlisted in the U.S. Army 26 Oct 1942 in New York City, N.Y. during World War II.

The Franzrebs are an old and prosperous Staten Island family. His ancestor John Edward Franzreb (Memorial ID 182770572) immigrated to Manhattan from Germany in the mid-1800s, and in 1876, took over management of the Four Corners Hotel on Manor Road. He bought the Silver Lake Hotel (where the reservoir is now located) in 1881 along with the ice business that came with it. His son John ran the Staten Island Hygeia Ice Company. Other members of the family were also involved with that company. After 25 years, he turned it over to his sons, John E. Sr., George and Reinhardt.

The family later owned a 40 acre horse farm, Clove Lake Stables, on Staten Island and supplied horses to many movie companies including Hello Dolly. John Franzreb III served as the ringmaster for the National Horse Show at Madison Square Garden and became the assistant manager and then manager of the horse show.
