Lt Peter J. Barone sailed to France aboard the ship Mercury with the 317th Field Hospital of the 305th Sanitary Train. Soldiers of the 305th Sanitary Train of the 80th Division sailed to France for WWI on several ships, USS Mercury, USS Siboney, or USS Huron from Newport News & Norfolk, Virginia, in May, 1918. The Sanitary Train consisted of the 317, 318, 319, and 320th Ambulance Companies, the 317, 318, 319, and 320th Field Hospitals, and the 305th Sanitary Train Headquarters. The sanitary train returned to Hoboken, New Jersey, on the USS Rotterdam from Brest, France. 1st LT Barone returned on the ship Cap Finisterre from Brest, France on Jul 1, 1919 with the Medical Gas Officer unit of the 80th Division, Brest Casual COmpany B-4. Government Explains ONe Registered Twice, Other Gave Two Addresses, as Reason
New York, June 13, - The War Department yesterday withdrew charges of desertion made against George E. Ames, Jr., of New York, and Peter J. Barone of Buffalo.
The following summary of the case was made by the War Deparment:
"George E. Ames, Jr........"
"Peter J. Barone was given a delinquent order directing him to report to the Adjutant General of New York on June 21, 1918, and because of his failure so to report he was certified as a deserter, and his name appears on the list of deserters as a result of the report of the draft officials that he was in a status of desertion. The records of those who served during the world war show that Peter J. Barone was commissioned first lieutenant in the Medical Corps, August 4, 1917, and was discharged August 1, 1919. One reason why his name was not discovered when the list of alleged draft deserters was checked against the records of men who served is that at the time of registration the registrant gave his address as 786 Road, Buffalo, N.Y., while at the time he entered the service gas his address as 1409 Fillmore avenue, Buffalo, N.Y..
