Leon Jerald Jerry' Wopschall June 3, 1939 - July 27, 2018 San Diego Jerry Wopschall of San Diego, CA, died on July 27 after a short battle with cancer.
He was born in Pasadena, grew up in Altadena, and graduated from UCSB with a BS in Biology in 1961.
In 1962 Jerry joined the USAF. He was stationed at Lackland AFB in Texas where he worked at the Epidemiological Lab, and earned an MS in Biology from Trinity Univ.
In 1963, he married Leila Lee of Alhambra. Jerry had a long career conducting clinical research in virology with Union Carbide Labs in Oak Ridge,TN, Scripps Clinic in San Diego, and for 33 years with the San Diego VA Hospital.
In retirement, Jerry pursued his interest in genealogy. Through his research, he located many family members and documented family trees. He also volunteered his time as co-treasurer of Friends of the University Community Library.
In addition to his wife Leila of 54 years, Jerry leaves:
2 sons Adam (Anna), and Jay (Shawna);
4 grandchildren;
and sister, Carol Hodges (Fred).
The family will hold a private memorial. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Friends of the UC Branch Library, 4155 Governor Dr., San Diego, CA 92122.
