Merton Wayne DeBoer, 70, rural Emporia, passed away at Holiday Resort on Wednesday, July 25, 2018.

Merton was born at Emporia, Kansas on February 25, 1948, the son of William Wayne and Audrey L. (Stevens) DeBoer. Merton married Barbara Ann Dill in Sterling, Kansas on July 10, 1971. She survives.

Besides his wife, Barbara, Merton is survived by his son; Britt DeBoer, and his wife, Sarah, Powell, Wyoming, daughter; Leanna Schmidt, and her husband, Ryan, Olpe, Kansas, Brother; Lyndel DeBoer, Baldwin City, Kansas, Sister; Denise Edmonds, Cottonwood Falls, Kansas, and grandchildren; Johnny Ranft, Dylan DeBoer, Ryder DeBoer, Lauryn Greenwald, Thayne Schmidt, and Brailey Schmidt.

Mr. DeBoer served in the United States Marine Corps in Vietnam during the conflict there, and upon his return stateside he was assigned to the Marine Corps Barracks in Washington, D.C. where he served as a member of the Presidential Protection Unit at Camp David, Maryland. His duties also included serving as a body bearer for Marine funeral honors. He was a member of the NRA and the OOIDA.

Following his return to Emporia he served with the Emporia Police Department, the Lyon County Sheriff Department, and worked as an owner/operator truck driver. He had been retired 5 years.

Funeral services will be at the Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home, Emporia, on Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at 10:00 A.M. The service will be conducted by Pastor Earl Detwiler. Interment will be in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery with military honors presented by Marines from the U.S. Marine Corps detachment in Topeka, KS , Lowry-Funston Post #1980, VFW and Ball-McColm Post #5, American Legion.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home an hour before the service.

The family requests no flowers. Memorials have been established with the Emporia Friends of the Zoo, Eagle Creek Saddle Club, and the Emporia All Veterans Memorial. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home, PO Box #175, Emporia, Kansas 66801
