Bill was the son of Robert J. and Helen Lardin Smead. Bill served in the Navy, and afterwards was the owner/operator of S&S Appliance Service until his death. He married Nancy Lou Cain in 1957. Bill was a member of the National Aeronautic Association, National Free Flight Society where he was a national champion, Soaring Society of America, and Pioneer Settlement for the creative arts. He was also a certified S.C.U.B.A. diver. Bill enjoyed S.C.U.B.A. diving, antique cars, flying, model airplanes, reading, and his church. He was a member of the Open Door Baptist Church in DeLand.
