Dr. Karen Rene Reynolds passed away peacefully Wednesday morning in Sarasota. She was born November 11, 1964 in Warren, Ohio to Peter and Barbara Manzo where she and her two older sisters, Michelle and Linda attended St. Peter and St. Paul School and John F. Kennedy High School. Karen then went on to receive a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from Kent State University. Karen was a Clinical Nurse Specialist at Sarasota Memorial Healthcare System with many accolades and titles over the last 26 years such as; Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), Clinical Nurse Specialist - Board Certified (CNS-BC) and Fellow Geriatric Nursing Leadership Academy (FGNLA. She held a Masters Nursing Degree from Andrews University and a Doctorate of Nursing Practice from the University of Florida in Adult-Gerontology Acute Care. Karen also served in the United States Air Force as 1st Lieutenant during the Gulf War. She was stationed at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi where she met John Reynolds, who she later married and settled in Sarasota with. They had two daughters together, Rachel and Rebekah.In 2012, Dr. Reynolds was selected as one of 11 Fellows Nationwide to participate in the Sigma Theta Tau Geriatric Nursing Leadership Academy. She was the coordinator for improving elder health care at Sarasota Memorial. She has presented at many local, national and international conferences, most recently in Dublin, Ireland. She also just received the 2018 Nurse Educator of Excellence Award from Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Dr. Reynolds was an appointed member of the Sarasota County Commissioners Senior Advisory Council, She was on the Board of Governors for the Senior Friendship Center, Associate Professor at the University of South Florida (courtesy appointment) and Adjunct Professor of Geriatrics at State College of Florida. She recently published her first book, "Geriatric Assessment" 2nd Edition. She is survived by her Husband; John C. Reynolds, Daughters; Rachel Reynolds and Rebekah Reynolds, Mother; Barbara Hamilton, Mother-in-Law; Myrna Ezelle, Sisters; Michelle Ortiz & Family and Linda Welch & Family, Sister-in-Law; Rhonda Reynolds and Brother-in-Law; James Reynolds. A memorial service for Karen will be held promptly at 2pm, Thursday, July 26th, 2018 at the Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Rt. 72 ( Clark Rd.) Sarasota, Florida 34241.
