John was the son of John and Katrina Pihlajaunki Abelson from Finland. He was a farmer and later a miner immigrating in 1892. John was married about 1890 and had no children. His wife was in Finland and he could read and write but couldn't speak English. He died from pneumonia at the age of 30.
