James Michael “Mike” Olivero was born on December 23rd, 1954 in Bloomington, Illinois to James and Joanne Olivero. Mike graduated from Burlingame High School and then went to San Mateo junior college and San Francisco State University.

Mike obtained a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice from Illinois State University in 1983. He then attended Southern Illinois University and received a Ph.D in Sociology with a focus in criminology in record time. Mike received the opportunity to move to the Ellensburg, Washington to teach at Central Washington University. Mike was a well known faculty member in the Criminal Justice Department. He published numerous articles and served as an expert consultant in mental health related issues. Professor “Mike” specialized in research methods, correctional counseling, gangs, criminology and comparative criminal justice. He remained at CWU until his death.


Mike enjoyed riding his motorcycle with his brothers of the Unforegiven MC. He was committed to giving back to his community as sport official for numerous sports including basketball, football, and baseball. He officiated for over 10 years and up until his death. Mike will be forever missed by all those who got the chance to interact with him.

Mike had three children and two beloved step children. His children are Leticia (Lety), 26, Jacob, 23, and Layla, 19. His step children include Stephen and Kelley. He is survived by them all and by his longtime companion, Stephanie Carlsen, as well as by his younger brothers, Jeff Olivero and Joseph Olivero. His mother and his father both predeceased him. Mike will be missed but never forgotten by any lucky enough to have met him.

The service for James Michael Olivero will be held at Ellensburg Cemetery IOOF at 11 am on Saturday July 21st.
