Seaman 1st class George Stanley Abbott lost his life in World War II serving aboard the USS Indianapolis. The sinking of USS Indianapolis led to the greatest single loss of life at sea, from a single ship, in the history of the US Navy. The story of the USS Indianapolis is one of the most harrowing in United States history. The Navy ship, a Portland-class heavy cruiser (CA-35), was tasked with a top-secret mission in the last days of World War II, delivering components for the A-bomb that would be dropped on Hiroshima, helping to end that war. After making the delivery to Guam, the ship took off, once again under a cloak of secrecy. A short time later it was torpedoed by an Imperial Japanese Navy submarine and sank in the Philippine Sea. Of 1,195 crewmen aboard, only 316 survived in the shark infested water. His remains rest in the Philippine Sea. Petty Officer Leathers' service number was 867 37 56.
