As a native of Cincinnati, John loved baseball & enjoyed a pitching tryout with the Reds as a teenager. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1959 with a degree in Geology. John traveled the world during 26 years as a US Army Infantry Officer to include three combat tours in Vietnam. He earned numerous military decorations to include the coveted Combat Infantry Badge and six Bronze Stars (three for valor). He worked at the Pentagon & the Army War College. In 2002, John was inducted into the Ohio Military Hall of Fame.
John served his community through several civic, patriotic & historic preservation endeavors. He resided in Kings Park West (KPW) since 1982 & was a parishioner of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. He held leadership positions in the VFW. John was a board member of the Fairfax Station Railroad Museum. He served as the historian for the Ancient Order of Hibernians & the American Legion. Always curious, John had a thirst for learning. Sharon Bulova (Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman) honored John with the 2015 Lord Fairfax award for his love of history, country & service.
For over 20 years, John served as Chairman of Parks & Lake Committee for KPW. His efforts led to beautiful established trails around Royal Lake & along Shane’s Creek. He spearheaded park clean up events, wrote articles, educated Boy Scouts and facilitated Eagle Scout projects that helped the parkland. In 2008, John was honored in a ceremony that renamed this area the “John P McAnaw Woodlands & Recreation Area at Royal Lake” in recognition of his selfless dedication. These signs are located at both entrances to Royal Lake.
John fought tirelessly to identify and preserve Civil War sites throughout Northern Virginia. He held leadership positions with the Bull Run Civil War Round Table & was a frequent speaker at events. He enlisted the support of public officials to save historic sites from developers & their bulldozers. John was well known for leading numerous educational Civil War tours, which featured his meticulous hand-drawn maps & off-trail adventures.
Funeral Mass will be at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 5121 Woodland Way, Annandale on July 13, 2018 at 1:00 pm. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
