Company A, 12th Regiment, Connecticut Volunteers, Union

Captain George C. Saunders.

Captain George Carlos Saunders, until recently captain of the tug Spartan, of the Hartford & New York Transportation Company, died at his home in South Glastonbury, Friday evening. He was born in April, 1845, being the son of a well known river man, Captain William Saunders. It was on his father's scow that he got his first experience on the water. He was on the river until the Civil War when he enlisted in the artillery where he served with distinction.

In 1880 he was captain of the tug A. M. Smith, and soon after captain of the Admiral Farragut and of the M. R. Brazos. After serving on the tug Mabel, he went to the Sachem, and then to the big tug Spartan, on which he served until he was retired last summer.

Captain Carl Saunders was a member of Columbia Lodge, F. & A. M., of South Glastonbury. His wife, a daughter of the late Hudson Alger, died a few months ago. He leaves one son, Louis B. Saunders, of Glastonbury.
