Obituary for Douglas Celestin Hively

Douglas Celestin Hively, 62, of Richland, Washington, passed away of a heart attack in his home on May 29, 2018. Doug was born to James D. Hively and Julia Durocher Hively on September 13, 1955, in Kennewick, and graduated from Kamiakin High School in 1974. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Rod Hively. He is survived by 2 sisters, 1 brother and their families.

After high school Doug went to work for his parents at Kennewick Furniture, and after his father’s death continued to assist his mother until they closed the store in 1989. During these years, Doug joined the Benton County Fire District #1 as a volunteer firefighter and Battalion Chief. He also became an accomplished scuba diver and instructor. He was one of the original members of the Lower Columbia Basin Search and Rescue in the late 1970’s, and he worked with other members to change the team name to Columbia Basin Dive Rescue (CBDR) and to secure their first zodiac around 1987.

Doug was a leader in the development of the Cold Water Near Drowning protocol within the tri-county area. He designed the current team logo, and the first team rescue vehicle, which was acquired in 1988. He was a member of the Atomic Ducks Dive Club for many years and served as their president during part of that time.

Doug had the heart of a teacher, and he was an avid advocate of safe diving practices. He promoted the Dive Rescue International program out of Fort Collins, Colorado, as well as public awareness of CBDR’s function and importance. Doug reluctantly left the team in 1989 to open Cycle-Logical BMW Motor Cycle in Eugene, Oregon. Experiencing declining health, he retired to the Tri-Cities in 2003. By 2016 he was well enough to return to CBDR in a limited capacity, where he was active in team meetings and trainings.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 14, 2018, at Mueller’s Tri-Cities Funeral Home, 1401 S. Union Street, Kennewick.
