PITTSFIELD, Mass. (AP) -- Thomas O. Morton Jr., former managing editor of The Berkshire Eagle, died Wednesday of cancer. He was 80.
During his 37-year career with the newspaper, he covered nearly every beat, but spent nearly two decades as the newspaper's labor and industry reporter. He was named managing editor in 1973 and served until his retirement in 1985.
A graduate of Rider College, Morton was an Army veteran of World War II. He was captured by German troops in Normandy on July 7, 1944 and spent the next 10 months in prison camps in Poland and Germany before escaping with three companions in April 1945.
He is survived by two children, a sister and a grandson.
