Charles Hawkins Adams, much loved husband, father, grandfather, and brother died on Tuesday, May 15, 2018, at the age of 94. His family is confident that he is now reunited with his father and mother, John Carroll and Elizabeth Hawkins Adams, his sister, Mary Ann Minnick, and his older brother, John Jr. He is survived by his devoted wife of 73 years, Roberta Wheeler Adams, for whom he served as tender caregiver for several years until his own health failed him and she in turn became the loving caregiver. He is also survived by his three children and their spouses, Susan White and her husband, Fred, of Lynchburg, Beth Huggins and her husband, Steve, of Orlando, and John Adams and his wife, Sue, of Fredericksburg; as well as his grandchildren whom he loved dearly, Sarah McBride and her husband, Charlton, of Orlando, Lindsay Leykin and her husband, Max, of London, England, Daniel Adams and his wife, Kim, of Lynchburg, Taylor Dooley and her husband, Luke, of North Carolina, J.C. Adams and Luke Adams, both of Fredericksburg; and his great-grandchildren, Brendan Towery, David, and Ariel Adams of Lynchburg, and Tessa and Miles Dooley of North Carolina, and Finn Charles McBride of Orlando, Florida. His sister, Sally Allen of Indianapolis; brothers-in-law, C.P. Minnick of Raleigh, Wilson Wheeler of Lynchburg, and Royal Wheeler and his wife, Jean, of Blacksburg, also survive him along with many nieces and nephews and a host of friends who loved him. Charlie, as he was known by many, loved people and enjoyed so much the friends he met at Valley View Retirement Community where everyone was so kind to him and where he was often found joking with staff and his fellow residents. He also loved his caretakers at the Drinkard Health Center, Westminster Canterbury, who became as much his family as his own wife and children. The family thanks them for every smile, every caring touch that made his life better. Special thanks go to his CNAs, Brooke and Toni who each in her own way made Charlie feel special and to the Senior Independence hospice nurses and counselors who made his last days more peaceful and comfortable both for Charlie and his family. Charlie also enjoyed and loved his church family, especially the ones who gave him hugs every Sunday on his way out of church. Their prayers and loving kindness continue to sustain his family. As his family and friends remember Charles, they are sure to think about several things: his love for his wife and his pride in his children and grandchildren, his long and successful career as a pharmaceutical buyer for the Strother Drug Company, his support for UVA sports through thick and thin, his croquet playing ability (everyone wanted to be his partner), and his love for his church, Forest Road United Methodist, where he served for many years as a Trustee as did his father before him. Charles spent many happy hours over the last months watching and often supervising the construction of the new health care building from the window at the end of his hallway. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 18, 2018, at Forest Road United Methodist Church with Pastor Mark Tinsley officiating. Burial will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately prior to the service at Forest Road United Methodist Church from 10 until 11 a.m. Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family.
