Alber studied since 1513 in Tübingen, where he founded his friendship with Melanchthon and 1518 or (after 3 further years of study, most recently in Freiburg) 1521 pastor in Reutlingen. There the "Luther Schwabens" led by his powerful sermon the Reformation in 1524 to victory (abolition of the fair and ear confession); Countermeasures of the Schwabian League and the Bishop of Constance turned away Alber by the fact that he offered himself for an interrogation. Accused of heresy and the violation of the Edict of Worms, he defended himself and his work outspokenly and theologically founded in an interrogation of 52 questions (January 1525) before the Esslinger Reichsregiment; he was dismissed without a verdict. In the sacrament-dispute he refused himself to Zwingli without breaking completely with the upper Germans, while he joined Luther with reservations; he kept the turmoil of the peasant warfare, as Luther did, away from Reutlingen; the Anabaptists, especially those from Esslingen, he overcame by mildness and instruction; his Reutlinger Gemeindeordnung (1531) has a presbyterian structure (rare in Lutheranism). Alber is to thank that Reutlingen 1530 signed the Augsburg Confession. In 1539 he was in Tübingen to Dr. Ing. theol. PhD. In 1550, Ulrich von Württemberg appointed the expelled from the interim as a collegiate preacher and general superintendent of a parish to Stuttgart; since then he participated together with J. Brenz in the essential events in his church (Confessio Virtembergica, Church Order of 1553, Worms Religious Conversation 1557).
