The grieving family of a Melbourne man gunned down in his mother's driveway are at a loss to understand who would want him dead despite his links to underworld identities.
Khaled Abouhasna,39, called his mother half an hour before his death on Sunday, telling her he was on his way over from a friend's birthday for a late coffee, his son said.
But shortly before 2am Mr Abouhasna's mother heard shots ringing from her Lewin Court, Altona Meadows, driveway and he was found with multiple wounds.
"As he was stepping out it all unfolded," Mr Hassna said.
The married father of six, known as Kay Kay and Karl Kay to friends, could not be revived by paramedics and more than a day later his distressed mother was still carrying the coffee she would never have with her son, he said.
Mr Abouhasna's son said his father "had a soul of gold, would never hurt a fly," and that the family could not understand why anyone would want to take his life.
"The family does not know who or suspect anyone," he said.
Underworld sources confirmed Mr Abouhasna associated with former Bandido bikie enforcer Toby Mitchell and was the brother-in-law of Mr Mitchell's close ally Kazem Hamad.
Mr Hamad was charged in December over allegations he was involved in an international heroin trafficking ring.
Mr Abouhasna's son said his father had no ties to the underworld and had met Mr Mitchell only once at a boxing match. The Muslim family were frustrated with the police response to the killing.
"We need to bury him for religious reasons and the co-operation is minimal," he said. "We are left with no answers and no updates.
"We don't know when we will get him back."
Critical Incident Response Team police had attended the crime scene where distraught family and friends were gathered on Sunday night.
Ballistics experts scoured a silver Mercedes sedan at the scene.
As news of his death spread, friends paid tribute to a "kind and gentle" man who touched many lives, and described those responsible as "dogs".
They also posted his image across social media, including a picture of him with Mr Mitchell, who has survived at least two attempts on his life in recent years, both shootings.
"You had the Heart of a Lion," one friend wrote.
"Your presence felt like a big comforting protective shield to many – you were the first welcoming face recognizable to many in many rooms in many clubs everywhere."
Homicide Detective Sergeant Sol Solomon said on Sunday there were no witnesses to the shooting, but neighbours had heard screeching tyres as a car sped away.
"At this stage, we have no suspects we've identified," he said. "The investigators are following up all leads."
Detective Sergeant Solomon said the victim appeared to have been ambushed in a "targeted attack" but he would not say whether the killing was related to criminal gangs or connected to known underworld figures.
Detectives have confirmed he was known to police.
On Monday, a Victoria Police spokeswoman said: "As this is an active investigation it would be inappropriate to comment further."

A Lebanese father of six was killed in an "execution-style" shooting in the Australian city of Melbourne overnight, Lebanese state media reported.
The National News Agency said that Khaled Yehya Abu Hasna, from the northern district of Akkar, was shot dead when he was heading back to his home around 2 a.m. in Melbourne.
Meanwhile, The Age, an Australian newspaper based in the southeastern city, reported that a “father of six from Middle Eastern descent” was shot dead at 1:50 a.m. in the town of Altona Meadows.
The 39-year-old man was inside his car in the driveway of his mother’s house when the murder happened, the report said.
The mayor of Meshmesh, from which Abou Hasna hailed, confirmed in a phone call with The Daily Star that Abou Hasna had six children from two wives.
He said the victim had been living in Australia since birth and only came on occasional visits to Lebanon.
“His father took a plane to Australia last night after receiving the news,” Mayor Abdel-Rahman Ali al-Hajj said.
Local police, who have yet to publish the man’s identity, described the shooting as “execution style killing” and "targeted attack,” The Age said. They said the man was shot “multiple times.”
Although no eyewitnesses were at the scene at the time of the shooting, neighbors heard screeching tires as the getaway car sped away, Homicide Detective Sergeant Sol Solomon said.
"At this stage, we have no suspects we've identified and the investigation will continue on throughout the day," he told The Age.
