Delores Heissel, 97, of Le Mars, Iowa died on Saturday, April 28, 2018 at Good Samaritan Society in Le Mars. She was born on November 24, 1920, in Oyens, Iowa, to Charles and Lena (Ruden) Masuen.

As a young woman, Delores was chosen as Miss Oyens in 1939 and competed in the Clay County Fair that year. Delores graduated from Le Mars Central High School in 1940. That same year she married Dale Kunkel at Oyens and from that union had two boys, Kenneth and Ronald. During Dale’s military service in WWII, he received combat injuries during the Battle of the Bulge, from which he died in 1945.

Following Dale’s death, Delores worked to raise her two young sons. She was employed at the B&B Store as a sales clerk and later was a waitress at the Club Debonair in Le Mars. It was at the Club Debonair that Delores met her future husband, William (Bill) Heissel. They married on September 20, 1951 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Le Mars and had three children, Debra, Randall, and Kathy. Bill farmed southwest of Le Mars in Washington Township for many years. The couple enjoyed ballroom and square dancing, hosted family get-togethers, and in their later years, traveled often to Branson, Missouri to enjoy its entertainment. They were active members of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Le Mars. Bill died on December 18, 2000 following a brief illness.

Delores was a homemaker, providing support for her husband and family in a myriad of ways. She especially loved making birthdays and Christmas holidays special for her family, playing card games, and visiting with relatives. She’ll be remembered for her young-at-heart spirit, loyalty, and faith.

Survivors include her children Kenneth (Mary Ann) Kunkel of Le Mars; Ronald (Julie) Kunkel of Moville, Iowa; Debra Stellingwerf of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Randall (Sheryl) Heissel of Le Mars; and Kathy (Bret) Brouillette of Parker, Colorado; 13 grandchildren: Dena (Jeff) Marineau, Keri (Al) Pick, Tami (Mick) Langel, Jenna (Wes) Jepsen, Tara Stellingwerf, Ryan (Becky) Heissel, Nick Heissel, Sara Brouillette, Michele Brouillette, Kyle Brouillette, Erin Brouillette, Kate Brouillette, and Claire Brouillette; 10 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.
