Born in Martinsville, VA, he was the son of the late Charles and Verdie Bell. He retired from the U.S. Marine Corps after 30 years of dedicated and decorated service with top honors. He served three tours in Vietnam and traveled around the world 3 times.
Billy never met a stranger and hand many war stories to tell. He loved his cats, Panther, Angel, and Spider and his American Eskimo dogs, Kody Bell and Wolfie, all of them would fight to sit on his lap in his easy chair. It may have been also because of all the snacks around it and on the TV tray.
Left to cherish his memory: his wife, Joanne Bell; son, William Sawyer (Liza); daughter, Deborah Oertel (Danny); brother, Paul Bell (Debra); grandchildren, Whitney and Jordan; and nephews, Thomas and Linda.
The family would like to thank all the staff at Chesapeake General Hospital for outstanding care and family physicians, Dr. Louis Carideo, Dr. Zattam Musselmani, Dr. Thomas Mauser, Dr. Aislam, the outstanding rescue of No. 5 and firemans they saved his life many times enroute to the hospital, and our friends, Deboses, Beliles, Duck and family, Carolyn and Pete, Joyce and family, plus many more.
When my brother-in-law passed my sister, Margie and I, called him our Marine guard dog, because he guarded us well.
The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Bridge Chapel on Friday, April 27, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. The funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. Friday in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow in Powells Point Christian Church Cemetery. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com
