HENRY G. ABBOTT

Another old resident and Sterling citizen passed away yesterday in the demise of Henry G. Abbott at his home , No. 370 Genesee street. For some time past his health had been failing and his advanced age precluded the hope of recovery.
Mr. Abbott was born in Lowville in 1818. He came here when a young man and in 1834 left utica for Syracuse . Soon after he moved to Milwaukee and then to Chicago . In 1840 he returned to Syracuse where he remained nine years. In 1849 with his brother James he opened a dry goods store in this city. This was carried on 12 years. He next engaged in business in New York and later in Chicago , where his establishment was destroyed by the great fire of 1870. For the past 17 years the family had made Utica their home.
In 1844 Mr. Abbott married Miss Mary C. Babcock , daughter of Dr. Charles Babcock of New Hartford . She died last year. The surviving children are Thomas A. and William P. Abbott , of St. Paul and Misses Mary Ella and Jennie Abbott , of this city.
Mr. Abbott was one of the Oldest members of the First Presbyterian Church and exemplified his religious convictions in his daily intercourse with his fellow men. His probity , Gladness, Charity and bearing toward others combined to make him the ideal citizen. He deserves a place among the prominent personages of our city who have recently died and whose going was regretted by the entire community.
