He married Lurlie E. Wolgamuth (1914-1971), daughter of Truman and Hazel Wolgamuth, on October 19, 1940 in Elizabethtown. (She was born Lurlie Costilow but her father died when she was an infant, and her mother married Truman Wolgamuth in 1920.)

During WWII, he was a lieutenant in the 372nd Field Artillery Battalion (155mm Howitzer), 99th Division, US Army. He was killed in action on the first day of the Battle of the Bulge. He is briefly mentioned in the book, "The Race for the Rhine Bridges 1940, 1944, 1945" by Alexander McKee.
