Architect. He joined the firm of H.H. Richardson in Boston in 1881. In 1886, he was sent to Pittsburgh to help in the completion of the Allegheny Court House. He settled in Pittsburgh and formed the firm of Rutan & Russell with Frederick A. Russell. He was the supervising architect of the Allegheny Post Office and designed the Hotel Schenley (now the William Pitt Union at the University of Pittsburgh), the Lincoln Hotel (gone), and other office buildings and houses in the Pittsburgh area. He lived in Sewickley. In 1901, he was elected as Associate of the American Institute of Architects.
