Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. Served in the Civil War as a Sergeant in Company B, 38th United States Colored Troops. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at the Battle of New Market Heights, Virginia on September 29, 1864. His citation reads simply “Gallantry in the assault”. His Medal was issued on February 18, 1874. He was one of three 38th USCT soldiers to be awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery during the War (the others being Private William Henry Barnes and 1st Sergeant Edward Ratcliff).
