Louis Roycraft Smith, Jr., Ph.D., of Livingston, AL passed away Monday, March 12, 2018, in Tuscaloosa, AL after a brief illness.

Dr. Smith was born April 12, 1945 in Demopolis, AL to Trice Dryer Smith of Birmingham, AL and Louis Roycraft Smith of Livingston, AL.

He was predeceased by his parents and an infant daughter.

He is survived by his wife Carole Williams Smith, a native of Montgomery, AL, and three sons, Louis Roycraft Smith, III "Pat" and wife, Amanda, of Demopolis, Cullen Holloway Smith and wife, Bethany, of Tuscaloosa and Dr. Jack Dryer Smith and wife, Klancie, of Starkville, MS. Additionally, he is survived by nine grandchildren, Tanner Morgan Smith, Louis Cooper Smith, Benjamin Dryer Smith, Jack Callahan Smith, Phillip Randall Smith, Sarah Elizabeth Smith, and William Parker Smith, William Cullen Smith and Olivia Trice Smith.

Dr. Smith attended Marion Military Institute and graduated from Livingston High School. He received a BA Degree in History from Birmingham-Southern College, an MA Degree in History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, N.C. and a Ph.D. in History from the University of Alabama. He completed additional graduate work in Counselor Education at the University of Alabama.

Smith began his professional career in Sumter County as Headmaster of Sumter Academy. Dr. Smith taught at the University of West Alabama for 28 years, rising to the rank of Professor and serving as the Dean of Online Programs at UWA. During his tenure at West Alabama, Dr. Smith served as faculty advisor to Kappa Delta Pi Education Honorary Fraternity and as Division II Faculty Athletic Representative to the NCAA. Smith was the State of Alabama Coordinator for We the People and Project Citizen and was a long standing member of the Alabama Counseling Association and the Alabama Historical Association. Dr. Smith was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, and in 2002 he received the Loraine McIlwain Bell Trustee Professor Award for Demonstrated Excellence in Teaching, Scholarship and Leadership.

Dr. Smith was a life-long member of First Presbyterian Church in Livingston. He served as Sunday school teacher, Deacon, Elder and church treasurer. Smith also served one term as Moderator of the Presbytery of Sheppards and Lapsley.

Following a family burial service, the Reverend Barrett Abernethy will conduct funeral services from First Presbyterian Church at 11:00 a.m. with a reception following in the Chaney Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, PO Drawer MM Livingston, AL 35470.
