MARIA COLVIN: Maria Julie Bernwardine Zoe von Kielmansegg Colvin was born in Hildesheim, Germany, on Oct. 19, 1921, the fifth and youngest child of Eduard Count Kielmansegg and his wife Gabriella (née Princess Wrede), and she grew up on the family estate at Walshausen in north Germany. She studied languages at the University of Heidelberg, Germany, until her studies were interrupted by compulsory war service in 1944. After the war, she worked for the American Military Government, for the U.S. Consulate, and for the Displaced Persons Commission in Salzburg, Austria, where she met her husband, Milton Colvin. After their marriage, they moved to Missoula, Mont., where he began his career as a university professor, eventually taking up a position at Washington and Lee University in Lexington for many years. In Lexington, in addition to raising a family of five children, Maria participated in a number of community activities, among them Stonewall Jackson Hospital Auxiliary and Hospice, Lexington Area Food Bank, Meals-On-Wheels, and League of Women Voters. She painted watercolors and was affiliated with Artists in Cahoots. In later years, she worked as secretary for the Foreign Language Department at W&L. In 1997 she accompanied her husband to Collington life care community in Maryland where she continued with her painting and with her participation in a variety of community service activities at Collington. Maria passed away on Friday, Sept. 4, 2015, at the age of 93. She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton Colvin, and by her daughter, Caroline. N-G.
