Royce Wayne Hughes, Sr., 77, of Newton, Texas, passed away peacefully, on February 26, 2018 in Beaumont, Texas

He was born on December 1, 1940 in Bon Wier, Texas, to Benjamin Franklin Hughes and Blondell (Wilson) Hughes.

He grew up in Newton County, Texas and graduated from Newton High School, class of 1958. He played basketball for the Newton Eagles and remained a loyal Newton Eagle fan throughout his life. He was the owner of Newton Automotive for many years.

Wayne grew up hunting and fishing and passed this love down to his two sons and grandchildren. Every year he welcomed and hosted "opening weekend of deer season" at his house and provided hospitality and a great time of story telling. Every spring, Wayne anxiously anticipated when the crappie would start biting. He loved participating in the bass fishing tournament that Ronny Harris organized on an annual basis.

Wayne's happiest moments were undoubtedly the times spent together as a family. Times at his lake house on Toledo Bend, times on the hunting lease in Bon Wier, fishing on Rayburn and times around the fire will forever be etched in our memory. The times he shared with his siblings and their families were always filled with laughter and unbelievable stories. He always had a kind word and a loving heart for everyone he knew.

Of all of his accomplishments, Wayne treasured being a Dad, Pappy and G-Pappy the most. He coached his two boys in Little League, taught them to hunt and fish and endless hours molding them into the men they are today. He welcomed two daughters-in-law into his family and always made them feel as though they were the daughters he never has. From riding four wheelers, fishing, hunting or having a lap full of kids, Pappy's house was a favorite.

His grandchildren and great-grandchild range in ages from 18 months to 24 years old. Though his illness prevented him from attending, he was the best man in his grandson, Cameron's, wedding in February. It never mattered what the family was doing, everyone always wanted Pappy there.

He is preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Delores (Hughes) Slay and Beatrice (Hughes) Downing Moye.

He is survived by his two sons and their wives, Royce and Stacey Hughes and Alan and Kristen Hughes; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; siblings, Benjamin Hughes and wife, Mary Ellen, Delma Eaves and husband Robert, Wilson Hughes and wife Nelda and Yvonne Hall and husband Wayne.

Knowing that through Jesus Christ, this is not the end, but only an intermission until we see him again.

So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you...John 16:22
