Bamidele John “DJ” Abogunrin, 48, died on Friday, February 9, 2018 in Stafford after a yearlong struggle with pancreatic cancer
DJ was born in Iowa City, Iowa to Bamidele Joel Abogunrin and Ruth Johnson from Ames, Iowa. He was married to Dionne Cuellar and together they raised their daughter Anika J. Abogunrin along with Tiwalola Abogunrin, Ashley Abogunrin, Kendall Phillips, and Eric Phillips II.

DJ is survived by his wife, Dionne; all his children; his mother, Ruth; brother Jerry; grandson Ashton; and granddaughter Parker.

DJ joined the U.S. Marine Corps as a reservist while attending Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. He was commissioned as Second Lieutenant in December 1992. DJ served the Marine Corps as an Infantry Officer before becoming an Acquisition Officer in 2008.

DJ loved playing soccer, coaching and being a referee. His leadership and infectious smile will be missed.

A wake will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, February 18 at Covenant Funeral Service, 1310 Courthouse Road, Stafford, Va. 22554.

The processional for the committal service will leave from Covenant Funeral Service, Stafford at
9:15 a.m. on Monday February 19. The interment will be at 10 a.m. at Quantico National Cemetery with full military honors. A Memorial Service will follow the interment at 11:30 a.m. at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 161 Embrey Mill Rd, Stafford, Va. 22554. Following the service there will be a reception at the church.
