SONORA — Alyssa Nicole Collins, 5, of Sonora passed at her family's home early on Tuesday, March 27, 2007. She was born to Evan and Lindsey Collins on Jan. 22, 2002, in Lancaster, Pa.

Alyssa was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia on March 15, 2005, three months after her third birthday. She had a very long and hard battle for eight months at Cook's Children's Medical Center. She was able to be home and be a regular, happy, carefree 4-year-old girl. Then after eight months of remission, the cancer came back.

Alyssa then had to go through a bone marrow transplant in August 2006. She flew through the transplant with flying colors. She was able to come home on Nov. 14, 2006. Not too long after, the cancer came back for the second time.

Alyssa went through so much in her short lifetime, but even at the lowest points in her life, she was still so full of energy and light. Alyssa loved music and laughter, dancing and singing. Her favorite things were dinosaurs and animals. She had the best sense of humor any 5-year-old could have; she loved to make her Daddy laugh. She always played tricks on the nurses; they loved her beautiful smile and radiant eyes. Alyssa loved the beach and rivers.

Everyone was so amazed at how much this child kept her courage and spirit throughout her trying times. Nothing could bring this child's spirit down. She was an inspiration to so many. Her brother adored her from the minute she was born. She was her parents' bright little angel and the apple of all of her grandparents' eyes. Beloved by all that knew her, she brought a whole town together.

She loved Animal Planet and wanted to become an animal cop, "so she could get the bad people who hurt kitties and puppies," as she put it. She was loved by many and will be missed by all. Alyssa had the heart of a saint. Put it all together and she could change your life with just a smile.

Alyssa was preceded in death by her great-grandfather, Darrel Alley; and great-grandparents Lee Roy and Nell Whitworth.

She will be missed by her parents, Lindsey and Evan Collins; stepparents Kristi Collins and Jody Boggs; siblings Nathaniel Childress and Shay Boggs of Sonora; paternal grandparents Becky and Mac McAngus of Sonora, and Bill and Patricia Collins of Gordonville, Pa.; and maternal grandparents Suzanne and Steven Whitworth of Sonora; honorary grandparents Brad Hull of Sonora and Linda Boggs of Abilene; great-grandparents Doris and Rayford Hull of Sonora, Roy Lynn and Sue Taylor of Kerrville, and Caryol and Doug Collins of Stewart, Fla.; aunts and uncles Jessica Collins of San Angelo, Steve and Amity Ponsetti of Austin, Jackie Crawford of Eldorado and Alex Tirado of Gordonville, Pa.; and many great-aunts and uncles, Carla and Rusty Garner, Scott Alley of Austin, Steve and Amilia Alley of Houston, Beth and Randy Settle of Granbury, Brenda and Tommy Valiant of Sonora, Bruce and Kitty Bartz of Humble, Texas, Bobby and Janis Bartz of San Angelo, and Albert and Kay Bartz of Midland. Alyssa had many family members who will miss her and remember her in their hearts forever. Funeral service for Alyssa Nicole Collins will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 31, at St. John's Episcopal Church in Sonora, Texas. Burial will follow in Sonora Cemetery.
