Rodney C. Abel

Spring Grove, Rodney Carl Abel, 76, went home to be with the Lord on January 28, 2018 surrounded by his loving family at his home.

He was born on June 26, 1941 and was the son of the late Chester and Ruth (Gettys) Abel.

Rodney graduated from Spring Grove High School in 1959 and married Carole (Senft) Parks on June 13, 1959 and had four boys. He later married Kathy Briner on February 19, 1983 and had one daughter.

Rodney worked for P.H. Glatfelter for 42 years and part-time at Spring Grove Borough Wastewater Treatment Plant for 47 years. On August 2, 2017 the recently updated Wastewater Treatment Plant was dedicated to Rodney for his many years as plant operator. The Council of the Borough honored Rodney by proclaiming August 2, 2017 as Rodney C. Abel day in the Borough of Spring Grove to thank him for his commitment and contribution to the Borough of Spring Grove. He was a member of the Instrumentation Society of America for over 50 years, a supporter of veterans, having three of his sons serve for their country, enjoyed league bowling with long-time friends, was a NASCAR fan (specifically a fan of Jeff Gordon), and a social member of the Spring Grove VFW. He also loved his two dogs, Suki and Koko. He was a devoted father and grandfather, a man of faith and a member of the Christ American Baptist Church in Menges Mills.

Rodney is survived by his four sons, Rene Abel and wife, Cheryl of Spring Grove, Todd Abel and April Dubbs of Spring Grove, Troy Abel and wife, Candice of New Oxford, Eric Abel and Tyne Caouette of Spring Grove; his daughter, Tiffany (Abel) Echo Wolf of Lancaster; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He is survived by his brother, Richard Abel and wife, Linda of New York; one niece; and two nephews. Rodney is also survived by Nancy Feather, a dear frien,d who helped care for him.

He was preceded in death by first wife, Carole, who passed away December 31, 2017; and by his grandson, Austin Wentworth of Oklahoma.

Following cremation, a memorial service in celebration of Rodney's life will be held on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 2 p.m. at Christ American Baptist Church, 730 Menges Mills Road Spring Grove, with Pastor Bob Coddington officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church.
