Charles Ernest Adkins, age 88, of Portage, passed away Friday, January 26, 2018. He was born on April 16, 1929 in Lynch, Kentucky to the late Henry and Lurlie Adkins. As one of twelve children growing up in a coal mining town, Charles left school in the 11th grade to start work in the coal mine. On June 29, 1951, he married Peggy Smith at the Church of God in Lynch, KY. In 1954, he moved his family to Northwest Indiana for work. Charles retired in 1995 from Gary Hobart Water where he worked as a Filter Plant Operator and formerly served as a president of the union. In his free time, Charles could be found in the yard working on his garden.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Peggy Adkins; sons, Charles David (Beth) Adkins of Chesterton, Timothy Wayne (Elyse) Adkins of Las Vegas, NV; daughter, Rebecca Joy Westerhout of Medina, TN; 10 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; brother, Sammy (Chris) Adkins of El, Paso, TX; sister-in-law, Barbara (Johnnie) Pyles of Portage; many loving nieces, nephews and other family members.

He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Bradley Peter Westerhout and ten brothers and sisters.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 30, 2018 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel, 5341 Central Ave., Portage. A funeral service for Charles will take place Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at 10:30 am at Hobart Assembly of God Church, 7545 East Ridge Road, Hobart with additional visitation from 9:30 until the time of service. Pastor Ryan McDowell is officiating. He will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery in Portage.
