Dorothy Irene Buchanan Kimbrel, age 89, of Griffin, Georgia, passed away on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Brightmoor Nursing Center.
Dorothy was born on May 9, 1928 in Fayetteville, Georgia to Jessie Hinton Buchanan and Vivian Maybelle Story Buchanan. She is preceded in death by her husband of 59 years Boyd Junior Kimbrel. She is also preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, Joseph Buchanan, Leon Buchanan, and Hewlette Buchanan; her sisters, Margaret Buchanan Kelly and Vera Buchanan; her granddaughter Andrea Haynes Kimbrel.
Dorothy is survived by four children, Ricky and Patricia Kimbrel, Gale Kimbrel Nemyer, Jerry and Betty Kimbrel and Janet and Darren Gibson; her brother, Fred Lee; her sister-in-law Charlotte and Mark Rowland; twelve grandchildren, Jason and Stephanie Nemyer, Nichole and Rick McKenzie, Drake and Amanda Nemyer, Suzanne McEwen, Joshua and Nicole Kimbrel, Adam Kimbrel, Sarah Kimbrel, Benjamin Kimbrel, Meredith Gibson, Grant Gibson, Regan Gibson and Gabriel Gibson; eight great-grandchildren, Bobby Blankenship, Dottie Blankenship, Ryleigh Shepherd, Gabe Nemyer, Gavin Nemyer, J.B. Nemyer, Samantha McEwen, and Mac McEwen.
Dorothy worked for 25 years with the Highland Mill and then retired after 20 years with Bell South. She was a faithful member of Teamon Baptist Church and Union Baptist Church. She was an avid quilter and for many years, she worked in the quilt ministry, at Teamon and Union, making quilts for the homeless. She also made over sixty quilts for her family and friends during her retirement years. Dorothy enjoyed traveling, over the years, she went to Hawaii, Mexico, and the Holy Land and often visited her daughter in California.
Visitation for Dorothy Kimbrel will be on Wednesday, January 24 from 10:30 am until 12:00 pm at Conner-Westbury Funeral Home. Following the visitation, a funeral service will be conducted in the Chapel of Conner-Westbury. Interment will follow in Griffin Memorial Gardens.
