Michael L. "Mike" Ackerman, 40, of Virginia, IL died Sunday, January 7, 2018, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident in rural Virginia.

He was born September 5, 1977 in Jacksonville, IL, the son of Kenneth Ackerman and Julie French Ackerman.

He is survived by his father, Kenneth Ackerman (special friend, Tracey "Scoop" Givens) of Virginia; his mother, Julie Ackerman (fiancé, Steve Harris) of Ashland; his grandmother, Judy French of Virginia; his sister, Jackie Ackerman of Virginia; a niece, Bailee Beiermann of Virginia; a stepson, Patrick Waddell of Texas; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Jack French, and his paternal grandparents, Elmer and Bertha Ackerman.

Mike was a 1996 graduate of Virginia High School and worked at McCausland's IGA during high school. Upon graduation, he farmed with his father at Herb Snow Farms and later with the Handy Brothers Farms prior to joining Petefish, Skiles & Co. Bank in Virginia in 1996. He was currently serving the bank as chief information officer and farm manager.

Mike was a devoted member of the Virginia Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed singing, playing his guitar, fishing and the outdoors, caring for his dogs, rooting for the St. Louis Cardinals, and spoiling his niece whom he adored. Known for his sense of humor and his ever present smile, Mike took great pride in his work at the bank and his involvement as a firefighter.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 am, Thursday, January 11, 2018, at the First Presbyterian Church in Virginia with burial at Walnut Ridge Cemetery in Virginia. The family will meet friends at the First Presbyterian Church from 4:00 to 7:00 pm Wednesday.

Memorial gifts are suggested to the Virginia Volunteer Fire Dept., Virginia Needy Children's Fund, or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. The Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Virginia is in charge of the arrangements.
