IN MEMORY OF JAMES T. NAVARRE

On October 21, 1924, James was married to Helen B. Kane.

James drowned in the Nisqually River, near LaGrande, Pierce County, Washington. His body was never recovered.

*James T. Navarre, 41 years old, formerly manager of the Monroe Liquor Store, was accidentally drowned in the Nisqually River at LaGrande, Washington, at 4 p.m. on a Monday. James was employed by the West Construction Company which had a contract to build a government dam at LaGrande. His brother-in-law, Ernest Enyart of Eatonville, a few miles away, was construction superintendent of the dam. James was standing at the foot of the dam when he slipped and fell into the icy waters. He was drawn into a whirlpool and an attempt by two fellow workers to save him was unsuccessful. The body was not recovered. James Navarre left Monroe on October 21, 1942, and went to LaGrande to work for the construction company, of which Mr. Enyart was superintendent. He had previously been employed by the company on the same type of work in Fresno, California, in 1939, and had been called back to resume his position on the Nisqually project, located about 30 miles south of Tacoma. James worked as a clerk in the liquor store in Monroe, Michigan from 1934-1935. In April 1937, he was appointed manager under the state civil service act. He resigned in 1939 and went to Fresno to work. James was born in Oak Harbor, Ohio, on August 11, 1901. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Navarre. He came to Monroe County in 1909 with his parents and was educated at Marron School and Monroe High School. In 1924, James was married to Miss Helen Kane at St. Patrick's Church at Stony Creek, by Rev. Fr. Kane, a cousin of Helen's. Helen and two children survived him. He was survived by three brothers, and two sisters. James was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. The Navarre home was 1837 North Monroe Street, Monroe, Michigan.
