Kermit Shatley Cloninger
80, of Conover, passed away Thursday, Nov. 30, 2017, at Trinity Village in Hickory. Kermit was born in Wilkes County, Oct. 1, 1937, to the late Quentin Kermit Cloninger and Grace Dexter Shatley. Kermit was a diesel mechanic for the Ryder Transportation company. He served for six years in the North Carolina National Guard. Kermit was a member of St. Mark's Church in Claremont. He was known for his collections of unique machinery, "junk" to his family. He loved going to flea markets to socialize and keep up with his friends. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 55 years, Christine "Chris" Cloninger; son, David Cloninger and wife, Wendy of Conover; daughter, Christy Sigmon and husband, Kemp of Claremont; sister, Patricia Clarke; grandchildren, Tyler Sigmon and wife, Kelsey, Parker Sigmon and wife, Brooke; great-grandchild, Ryan Sigmon; numerous nieces and nephews; and his dog, Sissy. A service of remembrance will be held at 3 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 5, at St Mark's Lutheran Church, 3216 W Main St., Claremont, NC 28610, with the Rev. Dr. Gary Haddock and the Rev. Paul Christ officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:45 p.m, prior to the service, in the family life center. A private burial will take place prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial can be given to St Mark's Lutheran Church in Claremont. Condolences may be sent to the Cloninger family at www.drumfh-conover.com.
