John Aiken died at his home in the town of Gainesville on Wednesday, January 2nd, aged 73 years. He was born in Delhi, Delaware County, N. Y. on January 21, 1822 and was one of eleven children of Horace Aiken - ten sons and one daughter-of whom six survive.
Mr. Aiken was married on December 24, 1848 to Miss Mary J. Conable, sister of Miss Eunice Conable of this place, who died many years ago. Two children were born to them. The daughter, Mrs. F. A. Steele now lives at Enid, Oklahoma; the son, Wallace J. Aiken of Tennis, Kansas, was present at his father's funeral. Mr. Aiken enlisted in 1863 in the 136th, N. Y. Volunteers. He was a member of William B. Lawrence post at Gainesville, until it disbanded. Mr. Aiken married for his second wife Miss Lucy A. Stears, who died ten years ago.
The funeral was held from the house on Saturday last, Rev. J. R. Welss of Silver Springs officiating. A delegation from Gibbs Post, in charge of Colonel Lawrence, attended the funeral.
