Hightower Rites Set in Thomaston

THOMASTON, March 13 - Funeral services for Robert Edgar Hightower, 62, president of the Thomaston Mills and the Thomaston Broadcasting Co., who died Wednesday afternoon in the Upson County hospital, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the First Methodist Church here.

The Rev. A. L. Gilmore, the Rev. Richard F. Simpson and Dr. W. C. Cowart will officiate. The body will lie in state from noon until 2 p.m. Friday at the Pasley Funeral Home here. All business houses will close at 2 p.m. for the funeral.

Mr. Hightower was a director of the Central of Georgia Railroad and was president of the Community Enterprises, a charitable organization.

He was a graduate of Georgia Tech and a member of Sigma Nu social fraternity. He served three terms as a representative from Upson County in the Legislature.

Mr. Hightower was a member of the Capital City Club, the Piedmont Driving Club and the New York Southern Society. He was listed in the 1951 edition of Who's Who. He was also a member of the First Methodist church of Thomaston, the Athens Gridiron Club and the Atlanta Homosassa Club. He was a member of the board of trustees of the high school, the Robert E. Lee Institute, in Thomaston, and the board of stewards at the First Methodist Church here.

Mr. Hightower was former president of the Thomaston Banking co., the Thomaston Kiwanis Club and the Thomaston Golf Club. Along with his brothers, he was instrumental in the establishment of beef-raising on a large scale in Upson County. He owned the Redskin Farms.

Surviving are his wife, the former Miss Ruth Evelyn Aiken of Brunswick; two daughters, Mrs. Alfred D. Kennedy of Atlanta and Mrs. Julian Roberts of Augusta; a brother, Julian T. Hightower of Thomaston; five grandchildren, Alfred D. Kennedy III, Virginia Hightower Kennedy and Edna Thornton Kennedy of Atlanta, and Ruth Hightower Roberts and Haley Roberts of Augusta; and two nephews.
