Madison - Ellsworth H. Shields, age 93, passed away peacefully into the presence of his Savior on Thanksgiving Day, November 23, 2017. He is now home with Our Lord, his dear wife Joyce and all his loved ones who have gone before him.

Ellsworth was born on November 9, 1924 in Antigo, Wisconsin the son of Harry and Esther Shields. He attended Milwaukee Lutheran High School as a Freshman and Senior and Waverly (Iowa) High School his Sophomore and Junior Years. Ells was inducted on April 23, 1943 at Ft. Sheridan, IL into basic training and proudly served in the United States Army Air Corps until he was honorably discharged on October 7,1945. During that time, he participated in 35 bombing missions out of Norwich, England, and eight gasoline support flights to France for General Patton's tanks and armored vehicles. His first B24J bombing mission was on Aug. 24, 1944 and his last mission was April 7, 1945.

In 1948, Ellsworth graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee with a business degree.

On May 27, 1950, Ellsworth was united in marriage to Joyce M. Peterson in Clintonville, Wisconsin.

For 42 years, Ellsworth worked in the insurance and investment field (CLU, 1972) becoming sales vice president in 1974, holding that position until his retirement on January 1, 1990.

During his earthly life, he enjoyed serving the Lord in many ways, including leadership, bible studies, outreach, choir, Sunday School, church finance, and most importantly, serving the Lord during his earthly time here and now for eternity.

Ellsworth was a devout Christian, who proudly spread the word of the Lord. He touched so many lives by his vibrant personality, warm heart, generous spirit and contagious smile. His love for family was unconditional and overflowing. He loved people. Ellsworth will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his three children, Randy (Linda) Shields, Laurie (Steve) Zwolfer and Lynette Grundberg; grandchildren, Adam (Kristin) Shields , Brittany (Mason) Hewitt, Abigail (Ben) Myers, Shaun (Jennifer) Lemke, Ryan (Lacye) Lemke, Derek (Jamie) Lemke, Alexis Stoneman and Austin Grundberg; two step grandchildren, Steven and Adam Zwolfer and 14 great grandchildren; and two sisters, Marian Wanzer, and Carmen Riedel.

Ellsworth was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife, Joyce (January 2, 1996); a sister, Arleen Sjoberg; and three brothers-in-law, Ralph Sjoberg, Richard Wanzer and Edward Riedel.

Funeral services with Full Military Honors will be held at EASTSIDE EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH, 2310 Independence Lane, Madison, WI on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at 4:00 pm with Reverend Nathan Berg and Reverend Peter Schlicht officiating. A visitation will be held at the church on Saturday from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Graveside services will be held at Wisconsin Memorial Park Cemetery, Brookfield, WI on Sunday, December 10, 2017.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in memory of Ellsworth to the WELS Seminary, 11831 Seminary Drive, Mequon, Wisconsin 53092 and Eastside Lutheran Church & School or the Accessibility Project at 2310 Independence Lane, Madison, WI 53704.
