Opera Singer. He was one of the members of the Mozart Troupe within the Vienna Staatsoper. Born in Vienna, the baritone studied with Theodor Lierhammer and baritone Hans Duhan. He made his debut at the Theater von Troppau as Osmin in 1933. He joined the Vienna Staastoper in 1940 where he sung 42 different roles. However, he is best remembered for his portrayl of Papageno, Leporello, Figaro, Faninal and Beckmesser. A true actor of the best order, he also became known for his "sprechsang" which he put into best use in his renditions of Tirol folk and drinking songs. His "Fiakkerlied," or "Taxi Song" became a staple on the Vienna vocal scene. He also had an international career, singing at Bayreuth 1943-44 and 1951, Metropolitan Opera 1952-54, Covent Garden 1947, Glyndeborne 1948, 1950 and Salzburg 1942-1960.
