Murder Victim. A 17-year-old Belleville, Ontario, Canada resident, she was savagely raped, tortured, stabbed repeatedly, and left to die on a dirt road while vacationing in Bermuda. The case is remarkable for its similarity to the 2005 Natalee Holloway in Aruba case, in which it is alleged that police and court blotched the case against the suspects. In mid-June 1996, Rebecca "Becky" Middleton flew to Bermuda with her best school friend, Jasmine Meens, who was traveling there to visit her divorced father, Rick Meens. Rebecca's parents considered this a vacation and a part of a gift to their daughter for her 17th birthday. On the evening of July 2, both girls went into the Old Town area of St. George to see a heritage night show that was put on for the tourists, and they ended up at a local St. George Hotel drinking. Although they called a taxi, they decided to leave before it arrived, Jasmine with a man named Dean Lottimore, and Rebecca with two other men. Jasmine arrived home safely, but Rebecca failed to return to the Meens home. Police found Rebecca's body that morning, lying in the middle of isolated Ferry Reach Road – she had been raped, tortured and stabbed repeatedly, with her throat cut. Bermuda Police identified two men, Kirk Mundy and Justis Smith, as the likely attackers – both men had been positively identified by several eye witnesses as the men who picked up Rebecca after the celebration in town, and were taking her back to Meens' home. The police took DNA samples from each man to compare with evidence found on Rebecca's body. Before the DNA test report was returned from the lab where it had been sent, Mundy pleaded guilty to "accessory after the fact" and agreed to testify in court that Smith had raped and killed Rebecca. The Bermuda Court accepted his plea and sentenced him to five years in prison, without the Police waiting for the lab to return the DNA report nor with the Police checking his story. The lab report eventually confirmed that Mundy had raped Rebecca, but not Smith. Upon receipt of this evidence, the Bermuda Court decided not to revoke Mundy's plea bargain, and released Smith with all charges dropped. Subsequent independent investigation indicates that Smith was also clearly involved in Rebecca's death, and that Mundy's involvement was more than he indicated in his statement to police. The Bermuda Police have this case officially as an unsolved murder. Despite over ten years of petitioning by Rebecca's parents and the Meens to Bermuda's Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP), the DPP has consistently failed to reopen the case, citing lack of staff. In February 2002, Justis Smith was convicted of assaulting two women and given four months in jail. Kirk Mundy was convicted of an earlier armed robbery and given an additional 15 years in jail for that crime. On the tenth anniversary of her death, the Bermuda National Trust (equivalent to the US National Park Service) named a nature reserve for Rebecca, in her honor.
