Wilma Abbott July 11, 1919 - Mar. 15, 2007 Wilma was a loyal and loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend who has gone to be with her Lord and Savior. She was born to Lucile Messinger Penn and William Penn, in Walsenburg, Colorado, where they lived on a farm homestead. When she was seven years old her father died and they moved into town. The family came to Bakersfield in 1928 where she attended local schools. Wilma married Byron Abbott in 1936. After living in Bakersfield for several years, they moved to Kings Beach, North Lake Tahoe in 1945, where Byron established a plumbing business and they raised their two daughters. Wilma returned to Bakersfield in 1968, and was one of the original employees in the accounting office at Cal State Bakersfield, retiring in 1984. Wilma was involved in several local organizations. She joined the Bakersfield Woman's Club in 1984, where she later served as president from 1993 to1994. She worked as a volunteer for the Cancer-Discovery Shop for 20 years, until her passing, and was a member of the Kern County Republican Women. Wilma was strong in her Christian faith, attending Daybreak Baptist Church, and enjoyed the ladies in her Sunday school class. She was preceded in death by her mother and father; her husband, Byron Abbott; her grandson, Scott Lemke; granddaughter, Joyce Boden; and her sister, Amy Engle. Wilma is survived by her daughter, Jacquie Sullivan, Bakersfield, and her children, Richard Boden, Julie Boden and Linda Ford; her daughter, Diana Paskett, Idaho Falls, and her children, Mark Hansen, Tracy Lemke, Michael Hansen and David Hansen; her 12 great-grandchildren; and her 3 great-great- grandchildren. She was lovingly referred to as "Grammy." She is also survived by her brother, Lynn Kemper; and sister, Sue Coats. Wilma was very interested in local politics, and she was Jacquie's strongest supporter during each of her city council campaigns, and she seldom missed a city council meeting. She also helped Jacquie by keeping her books for her rental business, up until a few days before she passed away. Her daughter, Diana, lived out of state, so the telephone lines were busy, and annual trips to Bakersfield by Diana, and to Idaho by Wilma were a must. She was a beautiful seamstress, and her family members took great pride in wearing the outfits Grammy loving crafted. A few of our many special family memories are celebrating Grammy's 75th birthday when she climbed to the falls along the Columbia River while camping, and Grammy's 80th birthday when she parasailed, in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. She was considered a celebrity on the beach. Wilma was a champion for her family, always eager to encourage them in their many adventures in life. She will always be remembered for her lively personality, funny sense of humor, youthful spirit, and her loyalty and devotion to her family. Grammy was "generationless." She was always included as "one the girls". Visitation begins Monday, March 19th, from 4-8 p.m., with a chapel service to be held Tuesday, March 20th, 10:00 a.m., at Hillcrest Mortuary. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park. She will forever be missed by her family and friends whose lives she deeply touched. We love you Grammy. Till we meet again. From Your Loving Family
