Josephine Victoria "Jo" Altman

Jo passed away on Wednesday, March 14, 2007 from a sudden illness. Her children were with her at the time of her peaceful passing. Jo was born on Jan. 28, 1928 to Joseph and Victoria Baycer in Bairdsford, Penn. She spent her early years in Bairdsford, a small Polish community and graduated from high school there. Jo's mother died when she was only two years old and she often told stories of how her father worked very hard to keep the family together. Jo was very close with her siblings, Jenny, Louie and John. She would tell many stories of growing up poor in a Pennsylvania mining town. Her older sister Jenny raised her and her brothers. Jo's friends and family called her Yusha which was her name in Polish. Jo married Charles (Chuck) Altman on March 19, 1949. They raised their two children, Robert and Victoria in Pennsylvania. Because steady work was scarce in the small Pennsylvania towns Chuck went ahead to California to find work. In 1963 once Chuck was settled in California, Jo sold the house, packed up the kids and their belongings and drove across country by herself to set up their home in Newbury Park, Calif. It was one of the bravest things that Jo ever did. Jo loved the sunshine and warm weather of southern California as it was such a difference from the hard winters in Pennsylvania. Her favorite thing in California was the ocean. Jo and Chuck would go camping at the ocean and she would sit for hours feeling the breeze and smelling the ocean air and hearing the crashing waves. In California Jo worked at Valley Presbyterian Hospital in Van Nuys, Calif. At the time of her retirement she was the Charge Supervisor of Central Services at the hospital. Jo and Chuck visited Idaho many times while visiting their son Robert who was stationed at Mtn. Home Air Force Base. Jo recalled the happy times they had during their visits to Idaho camping, and fishing and being in the mountains. When Jo and Chuck retired, Idaho seemed to be the perfect place to move. They loved all the scenic areas in Idaho, and were especially fond of Cascade and Anderson Ranch. In 1987 Jo and Chuck made their home in Meridian, Idaho. They continued going places in their motor home. While Chuck fished Jo was happy sitting in the boat watching the wildlife and enjoying the water. Jo loved her city house in a country setting in Meridian and could spend hours looking out her window watching the foxes, and pheasants, the quail and the doves passing in the fields. A special pride and joy in Jo's life was her granddaughter, Rebecca. She loved Rebecca above all else and even though Rebecca was in California and Jo in Idaho, Jo would talk with Rebecca on the telephone and they e-mailed all the time so Jo could always be a part of Rebecca's every day life. Jo's constant companions were her pets. Lady, her dog and Fred, her cat. Jo always had a special fondness for cats and had a pet cat throughout her life. Jo also enjoyed oil painting. She took classes and painted several pictures of the outdoors and of her cat that she hung in her home. It was devastating for Jo when Chuck passed away in 2005. She was so grateful for the friends she met at Holy Apostle Church. Jo especially enjoyed visiting with her lady friends, going out to lunch and the movies and attending the lunch socials. They were very kind and thoughtful in helping Jo through her loss and moving forward with her life. Jo is survived by her son, Robert (Susan) Altman; daughter, Victoria (Robert) Lewit; granddaughter, Rebecca and numerous other family members. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chuck, her mother and father and her siblings. Viewing and vigil with the family is Sunday, March 18, 2007 from 5 - 7 p.m. at Cloverdale Funeral Home. Funeral services are Monday, March 19, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Apostle Catholic Church, 6300 N. Meridian Rd. Meridian, Idaho. Burial will follow at the Veteran´s Cemetery in Boise. In lieu of flowers the family would like to suggest a contribution to the Idaho Humane Society 4775 Dorman, Boise, Idaho 83705 or your favorite charity. Services are under the direction of Cloverdale Funeral Home.
