Clarence L. Taylor was b. in Portland, Oregon in 1889. He later moved with his family to Spokane, Washington where he later passed away at the ripe old age of 85. In 1902 Clarence began operating the "silver cart" in the Hotel Spokane Silver Grill at the age of 12. He was a handsome young African-American boy, who stood by to do the basting of the meat in the fireplace grill. Next to its fireplace, with its spit, guests watched meat as it spun on a crane while roasting. The silver traveling cart was wheeled to the guests table where the meat was carved. Considered a masterpiece the original 1898 Christofle cart was copied in this country by Gorham and Reed and Barton, who sent craftsmen to Spokane to see it. The top of the cart glowed like a luminescent orb. Clarence (Senior Waiter) continued to work for the Norman bros. (William Shepperd Norman-Memorial#142742860) and (Benjamin Norman Memorial# 184410272) in 1902-1962 until the new motor-Inn (Ridpath Hotel) across from the Old Hotel Spokane was built. Clarence was survived by his wife Nora, who resided at their home, address; E. 1927 Fourth, Spokane, Wash.
