Commander James R. Zeitvogel USN (Retired) passed away peacefully and in his home surrounded by family on October 21, 2017 at the age of 95. CDR Zeitvogel was born January 8, 1922 to Charles and Minnie Zeitvogel of Birmingham, Alabama. Times were tough and he went to work at an early age to help his family. In 1940 he joined the U.S. Navy as an enlisted man, working as a radioman. He entered flight school in Pensacola and later received his commission in 1943. He was a proud supporter of the elite group of World War II enlisted pilots known as the Silver Eagles. During the course of his military service, he was able to complete his Bachelor's Degree, attending Tulane University and Georgetown University. His distinguished 25 year long military career was rewarded with numerous decorations including the Distinguished Flying Cross for combat action in the Pacific during World War II. He was employed by the State of Florida after his military retirement. He was a committed Christian and a member of Westwood Christian Church. During his retirement, he was among those who were instrumental in founding the Naval Aviation Museum. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Peyton, Oscar and Roy, his wife Lucille Aaron Zeitvogel and his son Mark Zeitvogel. He is survived by his wife Bonnie Zeitvogel, his daughter Shay (Paul Herrald) and many other friends and family members and friends who will miss his sense of humor and his fund of stories. Some of them are aware that he was a poet, writing only for his own pleasure and for his loved ones. Arrangements are under the care of Oak Lawn Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at Westwood Christian Church on Thursday, October 26 at 11:30am with a visitation from 10:30-11:30am. A graveside service with full military honors will follow at Barrancas National Cemetery at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Westwood Christian Church.
