Marie was born Maria Volk in the tiny village of Hoernsheim, Hessen, Prussia to parents Ludwig Volk and Anna Elisabetha Volk (nee Hinkler). She was the couple's second daughter, and was brought up together with her older sister Anna and her mother's older illegitimate son (Johann Hinkler, who later became the father of aviator Bert Hinkler). In 1865, when Maria was 4, the family left Hamburg for Queensland. Settling in outback areas such as Gayndah, several more siblings for Maria were born. Father Ludwig (originally a butcher in Prussia) worked as a teamster and often the children would accompany their parents on large bullock trains around the countryside.

In May 1879, Mary (as she was now called) married Peter Thusen Rasmussen Meiling, a Danish immigrant. They lived in numerous places across remote Queensland, and in 1930, whilst in Hughenden, Peter had a tragic riding accident and died. Forever after, dressing in black, she moved to Charters Towers where she still had family. Although she never had children of her own, she doted on her numerous nieces and nephews. She also spent a good deal of time writing poetry and was, by all accounts, a most loving and caring individual. In her dotage, she moved in with her Peno family before eventually relocating into a nursing home where she died aged 95 years.
