Obituary - A Patchogue man died unexplainedly yesterday after witnessing a freak accident at the Metropolitan Tobacco Company in Patchogue. According to Patchogue police, the accident happened this way; A car driven by Virginia F. Scharf, 36, of Janice Lane, Central Islip, was going west on Division street when another vehicle driven by Jack Sohn, 59, of 189th street, Jamaica, going south on West avenue, was preparing to stop at the intersection at about 2:15 p. m. Police said Sohn applied his brakes, but his car sped up instead of stopping. It collided with the Scharf car, careened off its side and continued south on West avenue about 275 feet. From there it went over a curb, across a vacant lot and struck the side of the Metropolitan building, making a five-foot hole in the wall. Sohn climbed out uninjured. That, however, was not the end of the story. Inside the building, at work, was Clyde A. Bennett, 51, of 17 Hayward street, Patchogue. Bennett, who had apparently seen the entire occurrence, died shortly after the accident. He was pronounced dead by Dr. David Bikoff at 2:56 p. m. According to police, he had resumed work following the accident. It is possible, however, said Coroner Dr. P. Jerome Laviano, that his heart may have been affected. He was believed to have been in excellent health, Dr. Laviano said Dr. Laviano reserved decision on the case pending further study of it.
